Welcome
The Mid-Michigan Youth Symphony is a full orchestra comprised of young people from the Mid- Michigan Area who share a common interest in performing orchestral music. The orchestra was established as an ensemble that offers additional opportunities for performing experiences, while fully supporting public school music programs. The orchestra has always been an “in addition to” and not “instead of” home school music performing groups.
In many cases the members of the orchestra come from schools that do not offer an opportunity to perform in a full symphony orchestra; it is these students that we probably serve best. However, because of the relatively large and unique number of concerts that the MMYS performs each year, all students benefit from participation in the ensemble. The purpose of the MMYS is to provide a high quality full orchestra experiences to the students in the orchestra as well as the audience attending concerts. Furthermore, as a service to the Mid-Michigan community, all MMYS concerts are free to the public. This includes the two large Kid-Koncerts given at the Wharton Center for the Performing each season. Currently, the MMYS is happy to call East Lansing High School and the East Lansing Public Schools it's home. Through the support of the school district we are able to hold weekly rehearsals in the orchestra room at East Lansing High School. Furthermore, the MMYS holds three concerts in the East Lansing Center for the Performing Arts at the high school. We look forward to continuing this partnership with the ELPS. We would like to thank Dr. David Chapin, superintendent, Ms. Paula Steele, Principal, and Mr. David Larzelere, band director for their support of the MMYS. |
